My Go-To Gut Friendly Snack

I'm the first one to promote home cooking and meal prepping healthy, whole food snacks in your own kitchen. However, I am also human and a very busy person just like everyone else out there. This means that sometimes, I need a grab-and-go healthy, whole food snack option when I just don't have the time. 

 

Now I am quite picky when it comes to packaged foods. They need to have a good balance between macronutrients, use as many whole foods as possible and not contain any harmful chemicals or preservatives.

 

This standard is actually quite hard to find...until I came across Fodbods. Fodbods is on a mission to fill the world with delicious, healthy snacks that won’t upset your tummy. The founder, Vanessa, spent years battling digestive issues, never knowing what to eat for fear it would set her tummy off.

Gut Friendly

If you know me well, you know I love geeking out on gut health. I am fascinated by the gut microbiome and how it is so integral to our overall health and wellbeing. I developed this interest as I went on my own healing journey when trying to solve my digestive issues back in 2021. 

 

Whilst I never went fully into a low FODMAP diet, being a health coach, I am quite very familiar with it. Just to give you a bit of background, a low FODMAP diet is a short term plan to discover which foods are harmful and which are helpful for people suffering from IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome) or SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth).

 

FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, which are short-chain carbohydrates (sugars) that the small intestine absorbs poorly. Some people experience digestive distress after eating them.

 

If you happen to be one of these people suffering from digestive issues, then there are a few ingredients you may want to avoid. The great thing about Fodbods is that they are made in Australia from 100% natural, plant based ingredients – no preservatives and nothing artificial.

 

They are designed for sensitive tummies so it's an easy snack choice when you're short of time and you're not sure what to go for or you haven't had time to make something yourself. They are also gluten free so if you're body doesn't tolerate gluten, these are for you too!

 

Macro Balanced

Fodbod bars have a great balance of macronutrients! This is also an important point for me when looking for snack options because so many of these 'healthy bars' are not very well balanced when it comes to macros.

 

So what are macronutrients and why should you care? 

 

There are three main macronutrients: protein, fat and carbohydrates. These are the nutrients your body needs in large amounts (hence macro) and are responsible for many things in your body, with the most important one, energy production.

 

If you're interested in maintaining a healthy weight or you have particular health goals, it can be beneficial to be aware of your macro balance throughout the day.

 

Protein

You want to make sure you're getting enough protein as it is essential to many of your body's functions including your metabolism and hormone systems as well as your tissue structure (there's a whole lot more but that's another post). The big protein bars have 15g of protein and the smaller bars have 9g which is fantastic and something you don't often see from other brands.

 

Fat

Our bodies need healthy fats. They are critical to many of our body systems and are responsible for things such as insulating and protecting our organs, absorbing fat soluble vitamins and providing us with essential fatty acids our bodies can't make.

 

I love that Fodbods use whole foods such as peanuts or almonds rather than oils or any saturated fat sources when creating their bars. This also means the amount of fat in their bars doesn't exceed the protein levels so you are still getting a high amount of protein per serve (hence nicely macro balanced!).

 

Carbohydrates

Still trying to work out why some people are scared of carbs. Carbohydrates are the primary source of fuel for your body. They provide energy for your central nervouse system (including your brain) and also preserves your muscle mass when working out.

 

Since Fodbods use whole food ingredients, they are an excellent source of carbohydrates as well, again, making them a macro balanced snack. If you can't already tell, these get my health coach tick of approval. In fact, they have dieticians on their team as well to ensure the right ingredients go into the making of every bar.

 

Convenience

I told you I would give you my top three reasons why I love Fodbods so here is the last one. They are bloody CONVENIENT! 

 

If I'm being honest, I would prefer to make my own snacks. I know every single thing that has gone into them, they are fresh and nutrient dense.
